Staff Profile for Attorney Jona L. Saxby
I was young and idealistic when I decided to go to law school many, many years ago. I dreamed that I would use my law degree for lofty goals: to help guide people through the complexity of the legal system, and to have a positive impact on their lives by solving a legal problem. I am happy to say that I still hold these ideals even after twenty-four years of practicing law. I have represented hundreds of individuals charged with crimes, helping them navigate the criminal courts and advocating for them in front of judges and jurors. I have represented hundreds of children in juvenile dependency cases and in family law custody matters, helping them understand their rights and serving as their voice in court proceedings that can be scary and emotional. I have represented adults in conservatorship cases, helping them bridge the gap between their desire to maintain their independence and the court’s need to protect vulnerable adults. I have represented adults in appellate cases, arguing their causes in front of the First District Court of Appeals. I have represented a child in a Social Security appeal, gaining for him Social Security benefits based on his legal relationship with his non-biological parent.
I have been a family law attorney since 2006. I recognize that family law clients trust their attorney to assist them in some of the most personal and stressful matters they will ever face. I work hard to help my clients get through the difficult and challenging process with good advice and realistic expectations. I have helped mothers and fathers in family law custody cases, assisting them in achieving and maintaining healthy relationships with their children despite the break-up of their family. I have helped divorcing adults achieve future financial stability. I am an effective litigator, but I also bring to the table several years of experience as a mediator and a collaborative law professional that offers my clients an alternative way to resolve their personal matters outside of court on their own terms with less stress and cost.
I am more than just an attorney. I am a wife and a mother, an athlete, a frequent traveler, and a lover of animals. I am fortunate to work in an environment that allows me to bring my dog, Rufus, to work. Rufus greets my clients in the office, and is a source of comfort when emotions run high.
I am also active in my community. I was a member of the Ukiah Kiwanis Club for several years, and often served dinner at a local soup kitchen and worked at local charity events that benefit foster children, the animal shelter, and the domestic violence shelter in Mendocino County. I have also coached a mock trial team for a local high school, and participate in the mock trial competitions each year as a scorer. I am a member of the Mendocino County Bar Association and the Mendocino County Women’s Bar Association, and was a founding member of the collaborative law group in Mendocino and Lake Counties.
